Washington D.C.  has been a lucrative place for startup companies over the past few years. A report from the Small Business Administration shows that, in 2013, more than 92 percent of businesses in D.C. are small businesses and employed about half of the workforce in the city. Bethany Mulcahy is the marketing director for Surprise Ride, a company founded in 2013 that offers children learning kits to help them develop creativity in a screen-free environment. Residents in Washington, D.C. have the highest rates of sexually transmitted disease, compared to 50 states, according to a recent Center for Disease Control and Prevention report. Out of the four kinds of STDs that the CDC report identified – chlamydia, gonorrhea, primary and secondary syphilis and congenital syphilis – the district scored No.1 in the first three by a large margin in 2016.

Insurer-medical provider split leaves DC residents indecisive

Earlier this month, some D.C. residents were asked to choose whether to stay with their medical practice or their health insurer. Patients received an email from One Medical, a 10-year-old concierge medical practice with facilities spread in seven major cities across America, including six of them in Washington, D.C. One Medical and CareFirst, two big partners, have decided to cease their cooperation, after failed negotiations on the increased rate and additional charges.
