The Eternals have been on Earth for centuries but haven’t interfered in its biggest conflicts, as was Thanos’ snap and his invasion in Avengers: Endgame, but who stopped them from getting involved and why? Although the Infinity Saga has come to an end, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues expanding with new movies and TV shows as part of its highly-anticipated Phase 4. This new wave will continue the stories of well-known characters and will introduce new ones as well, as are Shang-Chi and the Eternals, and the latter group will surely change what fans thought they knew about this universe.
If that ending doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because it now only tends to appear on TV airings. This Jaws: The Revenge finale wasn’t well-received following the movie’s release in the U.S., especially as viewers had grown to like Jake. Universal thus ordered hasty reshoots for foreign releases, and in the alternate finale, the shark suddenly explodes when pierced with the bowsprit – with the footage of its exploded body sinking being recycled from the original Jaws – while Jake is suddenly discovered alive but wounded in the aftermath. This version of Jaws: The Revenge is the one that made it to all subsequent home releases. There are other subtle changes between the two, including a little more gore in Jake’s attack in the original ending or extended shots of the shark stalking the boat. For some reason, the original theatrical ending doesn’t appear as an extra on Blu-ray or DVD versions, though it’s easy to find on YouTube now.
Two years before Silver Linings Playbook was released and nominated for dozens of awards, including eight Oscars, David O. Russell released arguably one of his best movies with 2010’s The Fighter, which earned six Oscar nods. This wasn’t the original plan as Russell was initially slated to direct Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in a Philadelphia story before directing Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams in Lowell, Massachusetts, as Russell told Deadline in 2012. But for one reason or another, the director shifted from Silver Linings Playbook to The Fighter after writing the former’s script and returned to the project following the completion of the sports drama.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame and introduces the title team, whose members are from an immortal alien race and have been living on Earth for 7000 years, yet they have never interfered with human conflicts, though they have guided humans in their development. The Eternals will reteam to protect Earth from the Deviants, their evil counterparts, and that will have some big consequences. Like with every MCU movie, most plot details about Eternals have been kept under wraps, but the trailers have given a good idea of what the story will be about and the movie’s connections with previous Marvel ones, especially Avengers: Endgame.
